These motifs are inspired by streets, maps, paths, and spatial constellations of social infrastructure from her native Namibia. In her artistic work, Ndjiharine addresses the restitution of cultural assets stolen during German colonial rule in Namibia, some of which are now being repatriated.

The textile industry in Switzerland was also entangled in asymmetrical global markets and power dynamics, such as the cotton harvested by enslaved laborers in the United States, and the adaptation of motifs perceived today as contentious cultural appropriations. This history remains underexplored, urging new perspectives and narratives.

Displayed on the façade of the Legler Areal, the artist’s textile banners spark discussion on the restitution of meanings and objects, exploring both official and unofficial histories. The collages deconstruct and recontextualize motifs within Networked Constellations, (2023–2024) blending the imaginary, symbolic, performative, political, and intersectional to encourage fresh interpretations.

Vitjitua Ndjiharine (*1988, NA, lives in Windhoek) earned her bachelor’s degree in studio art from the City College of New York in 2017. In 2018, she received a research grant from the Gerda Henkel Foundation in collaboration with Research Centre Hamburg’s (Post-)Colonial Legacy, working with the Museum of Ethnology in Hamburg and the National Archives of Namibia. Through this work, she developed strategies to deconstruct and recontextualize the pedagogical function of images and texts in colonial archives. In 2022, she was artist-in-residence at Dekoloniale Berlin. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including in New York, Hamburg, Berlin, Belgrade, Stuttgart, and Windhoek.

</details>

Portrait Vitjitua Ndjiharine, Foto: Gustavo Garcia

Vitjitua Ndjiharine (*1988, NA, lebt in Windhuk) schloss 2017 ihr Bachelor-Studium in Studio Art am City College of New York ab.
