The sculptures by Cristian Andersen (b. 1974, lives in Zürich) make up one of the few fixed material points of the Triennial. His minimalist works form an idiosyncratic set of furniture that expands the space of possibilities for social interactions. Here, the artist deploys the design vernacular of public furniture, while using the works‘ titles to make reference to a traditionally hispanic urban neighborhood in Los Angeles that has increasingly been subject to gentrification in recent years. Fabricated from sheet metal, metal, concrete, fiber reinforced concrete, and paint, the DIY character of Andersen‘s objects offers an alternative to the thoroughly planned design of urban spaces. As abstract objects, they invite one to stand, sit or lie on them, yet these concrete uses are impeded by the objects‘ uncomfortable materials and forms. Between the various locations in the Kunsthaus and the camping grounds, the works acquire slightly differing modes of reception, oscillating between art and the everyday depending on the context.
